The Diapontia islands are a complex of small islands, islets and big rocks located at the north of Corfu, at the transitional marine zone where the Ionian Sea meets the Adriatic.
Diaplo is the third biggest islet of the Diapondia Islands (among Othoni, Erikousa and Mathraki which have permanent residents) and administratively belongs to Mathraki.
The whole islet is covered in brush that makes way to a few narrow pathways that lead to different parts of the islet’s coast.
At the centre of the islet, well-protected by a few trees, lies the small church of Saint Nicolas, patron saint of the seamen and fishermen, who are plenty at the Diapontia islands.
On the west side of the islet, there was a fresh-water spring which unfortunately was covered by coastal erosion.
Up until recently, grape vines were cultivated on Diaplo and a fine local wine was produced.
When there were no agricultural activities, the residents of Mathraki used to leave their donkeys to roam free on the islet. This is why Diaplo is also called “Gaidouronisi” (“donkey-island”).
There are only two access points on the island where visitors can land to visit Saint Nicolas, enjoy the peace and quiet and the natural beauty of the islet’s landscape and enjoy a dip in the exquisite waters.
Unfortunately, the boats in regular service which connect Corfu with Diapontia Islands do not stop at Diaplo so a visit to the islet is difficult. Therefore, a visit to Diaplo is highly recommended to yacht owners; alternatively, visitors can rent a boat from the coast across the islet.
